The Papua New Guinea Advantage Conference Showcases Economy on Australia's Doorstep Growing Faster Than China

The Papua New Guinea Advantage' conference (5 August) to show Australian business how to succeed in the region's fastest-growing economy

BRISBANE, Australia--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Some of Papua New Guinea's most senior business leaders are heading to Brisbane on 5 August to promote opportunities in PNG to the Australian and regional business community.

The event will also be attended by Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser and PNG's Minister for Public Works and ex-Treasurer, Peter O'Neill.

Many Australians do not know that Papua New Guinea (PNG) is Australia's closest neighbour, let alone that it is currently one the world's fastest-growing economies. Spurred on by major gas discoveries, the country's central bank projects GDP growth of 9.5% in 2011—better growth even than China.

To help business people understand the many trade and investment opportunities PNG has to offer, the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Business Advantage International are hosting a PNG investment conference at the Brisbane Convention Centre on 5 August 2011.

The Papua New Guinea Advantage conference will provide high-level insights into where current and future opportunities lie in the land sometimes described as 'a pot of gold floating in a barrel of oil'. It will also provide practical guidance from experienced business people on how to tackle the various challenges that, as a developing economy, PNG poses to those doing business there.

The event will be supported by Trade and Investment Queensland, the Queensland Government's trade and investment promotion agency.

Chief Executive Officer of the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce David Conn comments:

'Australia has long-standing economic ties with PNG and is its largest trading partner. The number of Australian firms doing business in PNG is growing fast and yet there are still so many untapped opportunities.'

In addition to hearing from Queensland Treasurer Andrew Fraser and PNG minister Peter O'Neill, delegates will hear presentations from organisations such as ANZ, Westpac, Deloitte, the Asian Development Bank and Austrade. They will also hearing from successful PNG-based business leaders flying in for the event.
